Quilting on the Go!

clock June 30, 2017 08:17 by author Melinda

With all the summertime activities and lacrosse tournaments, I find myself packing my sewing machine and current project as fast as I do my toothbrush! Hours in hotels means hours of sewing for me!  One of my favorite "tools" to use both at home and on the road is my little Steamfast iron.  This little gem heats up quickly and gets as hot as a full size iron to press out those stubborn wrinkles as well as pressing seams to keep my quilt project looking extra sharp.

My little iron is also a must have for quilt retreats!  A small table next to your sewing machine to iron is so convenient and a cinch to pack!  The Steamfast iron comes with a little cup to add water if you like steam.  It also has a carry bag which helps keep it clean and scratch free while not in use.

Over the years, I have purchased quite a few irons.  Mostly, I had water in the receptacle and used steam when pressing or ironing.  One thing I found was that after the water had been used over and over, my irons would stop steaming all together or worse yet, spit out the sediment that had built up inside.  This, of course, makes a huge mess on your fabric.  I tried all kinds of water...tap, bottled, distilled, spring, etc. and never had a lot of success with keeping my iron in top notch condition.  My last few irons have not had any water in them at all and they are still working perfect!  There are quite a few pressing sprays around, but one of my favorites is Mary Ellen's Best Press.  It comes in a variety of scents and leaves your fabric with a lightweight starch feel which sure makes your finished quilting project look stunning!

Quilt N Go has a selection of the small travel irons and lots of Best Press...so stop in soon and prepare to take your quilting on the road!

Maybe we should get a tattoo?

On this last Mother's Day, the boys were gone to lacrosse tournaments so my daughter wanted to do something fun.  I thought she was thinking about going out to eat or maybe even shopping.  Her suggestion?  Matching tattoos!  Well, that is NEVER happening!  But I will tell you, all my sewing machines and even my quilter have some amazing "tattoos!"

These tattoos are stick-on and can be removed easily if you want to change them.  I had actually stumbled across these when reading through some information about longarm quilting.  The photos of the machine had all these cool decorations and someone asked about them.  Who knew you could find such fun stuff to deck out your machines!

Ruth has a few different sets in the shop, so stop in and see how pretty you can make your space!

Happy quilting!

There's Always a Silver Lining

Some of you know me and some of you really know me!  This year brought some major changes to my husband's work responsibilities which require him to be gone for a week or more at a time.  Now this is not normally a big problem because it means I don't have to cook meals and can spend a lot more time quilting!  However...the last two times I have been flying solo with the kids have been quite eventful.

I know as you look at this picture you might be wondering why I would have ever taken one of the silverware holders out of my dishwasher to put sewing supplies in it.  Well, as I was home one day quilting along in my studio, I started to smell something.  It smelled like something bad burning.  My first thought was that my quilter was burning up!  YIKES!  But no, I sniffed around and the smell was not coming from the quilter.  I walked around the studio thinking someone was burning some nasty stuff outside.  Just to be sure, I went upstairs and saw that there was a cloud of smoke.  This was not a good sign!  When I got to the kitchen, I saw what was smoking and let me tell you, the smell was enough to choke on.  The dishwasher door had an electrical fire going and smoke was billowing out of it!  The door itself was so hot to the touch it took me a few tries to open it to make sure it wasn't flaming on the inside.  (Probably not the wisest thing to do!)  I had to call the fire department, mostly to help me get this thing out of my house.  They assured me the fire was extinguished, but couldn't figure out how to get it out.  After a few phone calls, the dishwasher was removed and taken to the garage.

While I was at my friend Bonnie's house in Missouri recently, I noticed she had a silverware holder from a dishwasher holding her sewing supplies!  I immediately texted my kiddo and had him grab up the ones from the garage and put them in my studio!

So far, I have one attached to my ironing board with zip ties to hold my scissors, ripper, tape measure, and of course, Best Press.  The larger section I am going to attach with cup hooks to my travel ironing table!  I'll still have another small section left, but I'm sure I'll find a good place for it!

Now if I could only find a use for the tree that fell on the garage this week...

Stay safe and keep sewing!

Fun Summertime Projects

Summer is just around the corner and the kids will soon be clamoring for something new to do.  Quilt N Go has a few projects scheduled that would be perfect for a new sewer!  How fun to bring your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or special neighbor for an afternoon learning something new.  No kids around?  Bring a friend!

One of our classes is a self-binding receiving blanket.  With only two flannel fabrics and straight seams, this is a quick, easy project...and perfect for any skill level!  This one was made in less than two hours and will be gifted to one of my daughter's teachers expecting her first baby!  The animal print is a brand new selection at QNG and can be matched with quite a few other flannels in our flannel department.

Another fun and easy project coming up is making a pillowcase with no raw edges on the inside!  Choose 3 favorite fabrics and you will have a one-of-a kind pillowcase.  My family loves a new pillowcase to take to camp or vacations.  Every year, Jordan gets a new pillowcase for band camp with a music theme and she loves them! This year, both kiddos will be going to band camp, so this mom needs to get busy and get her assignment done!

Kits for both projects are also available, but to me, the fun is choosing fabrics!  Quilt N Go has quite a few novelty prints to choose from as well as other awesome fabric choices.  Call the shop to register for one or two classes.  If the times are not convenient, let us know when you would like a class and I'm sure we can accommodate you.

Stay cool as the temps rise and stitch on!
